Summer School in Budapest: Constitution Building in Africa

Registration is now open for the Central European University’s 10th Annual Summer School course on Constitution-Building in Africa – in Budapest from 3 – 14 July, 2023.

This course tackles the complex social, political and legal problems in constitution-building in Africa from an interdisciplinary perspective, informed by field experience. It covers both constitution-making process (the design of a constitution-making process, the role of the public, etc) and the substantive decisions made in constitution making (concerning systems of government, territorial arrangements, how to include rights, courts, etc).

With faculty drawn from across Africa and elsewhere, the course also examines the impact of different constitutional and political traditions on constitution making in Francophone and Anglophone Africa and the Maghreb. Particular attention is paid to the special challenges of constitution building after conflict, building on African experience as well as experience from further afield.

Past participants have included scholars – professors, post-docs, and graduate students – and practitioners – members of constitution-making bodies, judges, civil servants, civil society activists, consultants, and officers of international organizations.

Registration deadline: 14 February 2023.
