Colombian citizens voted ‘No’ to endorsing an historic Peace Agreement reached between the government and the FARC in the special plebiscite on 2 October 2016.
The historical and legal significance of the plebiscite was recently discussed by Martha Mayer on this blog.
The vote was very closely decided. The final result saw ‘No’ receive 50.21% (6 431 376) of the vote to narrowly defeat ‘Yes’, which received 49.87% (6 377 482) of the vote.
With nearly 13 million votes cast (just under 38% of the electorate), the turnout well exceeded the 13% threshold requirement for the plebiscite’s validity.
The outcome means that the Peace Agreement reached cannot be implemented in its current form.
